Google announces the death of your website in 2015
Google has publicly disclosed that any websites that are not mobile-friendly will fall prey to the new ranking algorithm starting April 21, 2015. Not only will websites that are not mobile-friendly suffer a penalty, but sites that are responsive and mobile-friendly will receive a boost. This means that while you’re sipping your coffee the morning of April 21st, your website will be getting slaughtered somewhere else.
Here’s what Google had to say:
Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.
To get help with making a mobile-friendly site, check out our guide to mobile-friendly sites. If you’re a webmaster, you can get ready for this change by using the following tools to see how Googlebot views your pages:
- If you want to test a few pages, you can use the Mobile-Friendly Test.
- If you have a site, you can use your Webmaster Tools account to get a full list of mobile usability issues across your site using the Mobile Usability Report.
That pretty much says it all. The entire search engine optimization industry has been all over this news. They’re touting this ranking change as a website “killer”, and the only way to overcome it is to play ball by Google’s rules.
The good news?
There are options. Websites, unlike print, are able to be updated or recreated on a whim. Your existing content may be well and good, but if your website isn’t mobile and tablet friendly, you’re going to see a drop in your organic search engine ranking. Consequently, as your competition’s ranking rises.
The flip side is you can take action today with your website, do the right thing, and you’ll see an opposite effect. You’ll rise, while your competition will fall flat on its face.
